La Catrina with Pansy Flowers
La Catrina with Pansy Flowers
La Catrina is feeling happy and spring is here with pansy flowers!
In the Victorian era La Catrina knows so well, the pansy was often used to represent forbidden love. It was given as a gift to a secret lover or romantic interest. They have popped up in her garden and she has picked some to give to Swiss Skeli.
The name of the pansy comes from the French word pensée (thought). This flower has been a symbol of remembrance. You may have noticed that after it has flowered and is wilting it tends to fall over resembling the form of a fairy person deep in thought. The Swiss artist Ernst Kreidolf illustrated many children's books about flower fairies and his pansies always looked like little people.
